50th Anniversary Plein Air

Painting Event

2024 Red Deer Arts Council Plein Air Rules

  • Check-in is open on Thursday, June 20, 2024 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre. The number of entrants is limited. Advanced registration is encouraged; however, you may register at check-in, provided we have space.
  • Artists may apply transparent or opaque grounds, without 3-dimensional textures, to their support of choice prior to registration. Supports with drawing or sculptural effects will not be permitted. Each canvas/panel/paper or other support must be stamped on the back PRIOR to painting. No unstamped art will be accepted for the show.
  • Each work of art must be started and completed en plein air (outside.) The event will be held rain or shine, so come prepared.
  • You are not required to return stamped canvases at the end of the day. You are required to sign that you have followed these rules and regulations, especially #3 above.
  • The size of the image is not to exceed 20” x 20” or a maximum of 400 square inches in area.
  • Artists must provide their own materials. Only the following mediums will be accepted: oils, acrylics, watercolors, and pastels.
  • Artists may paint any subject/scene outdoors throughout the area of the Gaetz Lake Sanctuary and 3-Mile Bend. Information on a variety of painting locations will be available at registration.
  • Artists will select their artworks for the sale. A maximum of 3 works per artist will be
  • accepted.
  • The show and sale of work will take place on the same day (June 20) at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. The judge’s comments on the works and the awards will be presented at 5:00 pm.
  • A 20% commission to the Red Deer Arts Council applies to all sales as a means of fundraising for the charitable organisation.

Submission of Art

  • Artists must be registered for the event to participate in the show and sale.
  • Artwork for the show must be turned in at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre by 4:00 pm on Thursday, June 20, 2024. Any artwork not to be displayed in the show must be removed at this time.
  • Artists may select up to 2 pieces of work they created en plein air during the event for the show.
  • All artwork for the show must have the artist’s name clearly marked on the back as well as the “Plein Air Stamp”. The entry card must be firmly attached stating the artist’s name, the title of the work, and the price. Paintings without the attached entry card will not be shown.
  • Works of art must be submitted in a manner that allows for ease of handling and display on an easel or a grid wall.
  • Event staff and volunteers will set up the artwork for the judging process and exhibition.
  • Artists should be prepared to leave their artwork until the end of the show at 7:30 pm. Unsold artwork may be picked up at this time and removed from the event site.

9:00 – 4:00 pm Plein Air Painting hours (Pre-Registration required)

4:00 – 4:30 pm Art Drop Off

4:30 – 5:00 pm Art Judged & Voting for People’s Choice

5:00 – 7:00 pm Awards/Show & Sale (20% Commission - Fundraiser for RDAC)

7:30 – 8:00 pm Removal of any unsold paintings by Artists

7:00 – 8:15 pm Supper in Festival Field

9:00 – 10:30 pm LIVE Painting - 2 Invited Guest Artists completed during Drumming Circle at Campfire
