Open Studio Tour

Open Call to Visual Artists to join the Fourth Open Studio Tour for 2019

The Visual Art Committee of the Red Deer Arts Council has hosted an Open Studio Tour for the past three years and we are hoping you would be interested in joining our roster of artists for our fourth tour 2019!

Planning of the 4th Annual Open Art Studio Tour for 2019 has begun!! This is a self-guided tour of Red Deer and area artists' working home studios on Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23rd from 12 to 4 pm. This event is free to the public. Artists will be able to show their artwork (possibly sell), demonstrate their art form, gather contact information for promotion, and distribute promotional material for their art and upcoming shows and events.

Registration is open to residents of Red Deer and area with home studios, or artists with working studios to which the public may be invited and who are either a member of the Red Deer Arts Council OR a non-member (see below about fees). Artists with studios in the Red Deer area, including in the counties surrounding Red Deer, may be included in this call. Previous years we have had artists from Bentley and area.

If you are uncertain if you qualify, please contact:
Diana Anderson, Chair of the RDAC Visual Arts Committee
403-304-0994 or degraff(at)telusplanet.net
or
Suzanne Hermary Coordinator for the Red Deer Arts Council
403-348-2787 or reddeerartscouncil(at)gmail.com.

All artwork must be the work of the registered artists. Home studios should have easy and safe access for the public. We encourage artists to contact their insurance providers in order to be aware if there are any insurance implications related to inviting people to your home on one or two days. Artists are responsible for ensuring that they have liability coverage, i.e. through their business or homeowner’s insurance policy. Artists will be juried into the Open Studio Tour by a jury of their peers.

If this interests you, please contact Diana Anderson, Chair of the Visual Arts Committee for the Red Deer Arts Council as above. Get your information in early to ensure enough time to complete your final registration by April 4th.

How to register:
1. Contact information – name, address, telephone number, email address, studio name and/or website.
2. Short Description of your artwork for a brochure (example follows from one of our artists the past three years – for your info). Keep your description including the demo to 50 words or less.

Additional information to help you decide if you want to join us:

For two days on Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23rd from 12 to 4 pm, we will host our fourth annual tour. Artists may choose either or both days (open for each artist to decide) and this will be listed in the brochure by days. If you want longer time it may be posted too. It is up to each artist whether they want to include another artist at their studio (young, emerging or friend).

Activity – each artist may decide what kind of demo or activity they provide for visitors to watch (may include stages of a process and discussion). A brief description as specific times for the activity can be listed in the brochure as well, if provided and appropriate. (We don’t intend you to demo for four hours straight, but work around your visitors’ interest and time.)

Promotion/Signage – a brochure will be made for the event. Each artist is responsible for getting brochures out to their list of clients and for doing promotion and poster distribution in their area.
RDAC will promote this event through local media and two newspapers, its website, Facebook page, and email list, several websites, and will distribute colour posters and brochures (which includes an artist guide and map) to area businesses as well as for artists own dispersal. Artists should be prepared to provide signage outside their own studios.

Artists and fees – there is no fee to participate for artists who are members of the Red Deer Arts Council. There is a fee for non-members of $30.00 which includes a 2019 membership in the Red Deer Arts Council. Any other artists who are guests of a participating studio may be required to pay a participation fee, pending a decision by the RDAC Visual Arts Committee.
*students who are guests in a studio – no charge,
*non-student guest artists 50% of participation fee, OR
*either may opt to become a member (student rate of $15.00 or $30.00 fee for RDAC membership).

Prizes – as part of the tour, we ask that each studio provide a small draw prize which may be an experience or a material item – artists’ choice. Artists will handle the draw at their own studio, contact the winner and inform the RDAC office of the winner. Prizes should be picked up one week after the draw date, after which time alternate arrangements can be made with the winner or RDAC for pick up.
Suggestion – if artists are hosting classes or events they may make ‘take-away’ items to give to the tour guests.

Ballot – RDAC will provide ballots to each participating studio. Ballots will inform contestants about the collection of personal information and limit how it will be used. RDAC will collect all ballots to coordinate names from previous years to fill out the email database. Participating artists will receive a copy of the list which may be used for Open Studio Tour guests for following years of the tour.

Post event and Evaluations - RDAC will host a post tour event for all the artists to get together either on the Tuesday, June 25 or Wednesday the 26th (date to be confirmed) to discuss the tour and do the evaluations at that time.
