The first Artwalk Developing Visual Artist Award goes to Margriet Hogue. Here, a young volunteer (left) and Ian Warwick, Alberta Foundation for the Arts representative (right) present Margriet Hogue with her award on May 12, 2018.

Margriet Hogue was born in the Netherlands and spent her formative years in Venezuela before immigrating to the east coast of Canada. After moving to Alberta as a teenager, Margriet studied textile and design at Olds College and weaving at the Banff Centre for the Arts where she honed her knowledge of colour theory and an appreciation for texture. She established her own needlework business in 1989 that specializes in reproductions of museum samplers from Europe and North America as well as teaching workshops.

Margriet's involvement in the arts has extended into painting and she has been taking workshops and courses over the past number of years. Her interests primarily lie in abstraction and the play that comes with building layer by layer of paint and joining texture and objects to create visual dynamics.

Photography plays an important role in her art as she like to use images of what she observes in her daily life and transfer them into her paintings.

She is a member of the Red Deer Arts Council, The Federation of Canadian Artists and the Calgary Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artist as well as The Red Deer Art Club.Through several of these organizations she has had her work accepted into juried shows.

Margriet will be using the funds toward an abstraction course with artist Michael Shemchuk in Victoria, BC this fall.

"This is perfect timing for Hogue to receive a developing artist award. Hogue has a truly dedicated daily practice in her home painting studio and within the last 5 years I have seen a great evolution and growth in her work. In the last couple of years I have seen a signature and professional style in Hogue’s artwork emerge. This award would give her the exposure and credibility to take further steps in finding commendable gallery representation that fits her colourful sensibility."
