Kerry Tronnes

I am a ceramic artist born and raised in Alberta. My love of clay first sparked when I was a child working alongside my aunt, but it wasn’t until a trip to Yuma, Arizona in 2017 when I joined a local ceramic club that my passion for ceramics truly reignited.

In 2020, I took the leap of turning that passion into something more. I set up a home studio and enrolled in the Visual Arts program at Red Deer Polytechnic, focusing on ceramics for four years. During that time, I explored mould making, surface decoration, hand-building, slip casting, and wheel throwing. What really captured my heart was experimenting with color, layering glazes, testing clay bodies, and discovering playful combinations that now define my style.

Nature is my constant inspiration. Walking around my yard in spring and summer, I’m endlessly fascinated by plants as they move from dormancy to bloom. It’s a reminder of resilience and renewal. Those moments often find their way into my work through florals, leaves, and the colors of the natural world. I like to think of working in clay as bringing a piece of Mother Earth back to life.

Today I work full-time at Flux Studio, a semi-private ceramic space in Red Deer. My practice flows between functional pottery, decorative surfaces and sculptural work, always with a focus on vibrant colors, playful textures, and surfaces that invite touch. I’m constantly experimenting, learning, and pushing myself to refine my voice as an artist.

I’ve been fortunate to learn from inspiring teachers and to meet renowned ceramicists such as Janet DeBoos and Carol Gouthro, who’ve encouraged me to keep exploring the endless possibilities of clay. My pieces often carry a sense of whimsy, charm, and energy - an invitation for curiosity and delight.

When I’m not in the studio, you’ll usually find me gardening, painting with watercolors, designing digitally, or making jewelry - always finding new ways to explore creativity.
