2016 Scholarships Award Recipients

Red Deer Arts Council are pleased to present our 2016 Scholarship Award Winners.

The Princess Margaret Scholarship for Post-Secondary Students of $500.00 is awarded to the top scoring submission from a post-secondary student. This scholarship is awarded to Cydnee Sparrow of Innisfail, AB. Cydnee Sparrow is a practicing rural Alberta artist, who is currently pursuing her Visual Art Diploma at Red Deer College and will receive her diploma this spring. In the fall, she intends to go on to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts. At RDC, she has won numerous awards and scholarships. She is a straight A+ student in all her studio and academic courses. She is an A+ student in art history and at the top of her class.

The Canada Centennial Scholarship for Post-Secondary Students of $500.00 is awarded to the top scoring submission from a post-secondary student in a media other than that awarded to the Princess Margaret Scholarship. This scholarship awarded to Ashley Rose Mercia of Red Deer. Ms. Mercia is enrolled in the Theatre Performance and Creation Program at Red Deer College. She has performed with local Against the Wall Theatre and will be pursuing her improv skills at the Improv Olympic five-week summer intensive training course. Ms. Mercia is a talented actress who includes writing and creating new formats for Bull Skit as well as teaching and leading community workshops, all while attending RDC.

The Canada Centennial Scholarship for Secondary Students of $500.00 is awarded to the top scoring submission from a secondary school student. This scholarship is awarded to Kristen Soley. Ms Soley is currently attending Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School. She has performed with the Red Deer Royals and received two awards from this organization. She went to Italy in 2014 with the Royals, learning and experiencing Italian music. Ms. Soley recently won the Woodwind II award for the most outstanding woodwind in LTCHS’s symphonic band.

The Waskasoo Bluegrass Music Scholarship for Secondary Students of $500.00 is awarded to the top scoring submission from a secondary school student studying music and continuing their music career in a post secondary school. This scholarship is awarded to Lane Petrosenko and is the FIRST student to win this new award of the Red Deer Arts Council. Mr. Petrosenko is currently attending Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School. He is a dedicated student whose life revolves around music. He is part of the Symphonic Band, the Senior Jazz Band and the Percussion Ensemble at LTCHS. He is an aspiring young singer, percussionist and composer. He hopes to be accepted this fall into the Bachelor of Music in Jazz and Contemporary Popular Music Program at Grant McEwan.
