2019 Artwalk Developing Visual Artist Award Recipient
The Artwalk Developing Visual Artist Award is awarded to Roberta Murray
Roberta Murray is a poetic impressionist painter from Alberta, Canada. From a young age art has been an important part of her life. Her grandmother and mother were both hobby painters, so there was never a lack of encouragement for her to pursue painting.
Roberta is especially interested in the work of Soviet, Dutch, and British impressionists and seeks to create paintings that contain elements of light, atmosphere, and emotion common to their works. These were the same elements she explored in her photographic works, which earned her much recognition.
Through painting Roberta is attempting to present visual poems about connection, whether it be people, animals, or the land. She tries not to copy the reality of her subject, but a sense of emotion that will allow the viewers to participate in the story and create their own interpretations.
She is a juried member of the Federation Of Canadian Artists and Oil Painters of America. Her work hangs in private and public collections around the world.
Roberta will be using the funds toward workshops with some of Canada’s best impressionist painters – Debra Tilby, and Ingrid Christensen among them.
“I am happy to recommend [Roberta Murray] for this educational opportunity.I believe any learning she undertakes can only help advance her career as a Canadian visual artist. …She is a strong impressionist style painter that has been making stead progress in her work.” - Patrick E. Meyer, Executive Director, Federation of Canadian Artists
